Ink stains are much easier to remove when fresh. The type of ink matters — ballpoint, gel, and permanent ink each require slightly different treatment.

Step 1: Place Cloth Behind the Stain

Place a clean white cloth or paper towel behind the stained area to absorb ink as you treat the front. This prevents the ink from transferring to other layers.

Step 2: Apply Rubbing Alcohol

Dab rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) onto the stain using a cotton ball. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading.

Step 3: Blot Repeatedly

Blot the stain repeatedly with fresh cotton balls, replacing them as they absorb ink. You should see the ink transferring from the fabric to the cotton ball.

Step 4: Rinse and Wash

Once the ink is lifted, rinse with cold water, apply a small amount of dish soap, and wash on a cool cycle.

Step 5: Special Care for Linen

After treatment, lay the linen flat on a clean towel and roll it gently to remove excess moisture. Hang or lay flat to dry — never wring linen, as it permanently distorts the weave.

Linen creases and shrinks if exposed to high heat or rough handling. Always work gently with cool water — its natural fibres respond well to patience. Avoid hot water, bleach on coloured linen, and aggressive scrubbing. Never tumble dry on high heat.

Pro Tip

For ballpoint pen ink, hand sanitizer works surprisingly well — it contains enough alcohol to dissolve the ink. Apply, let sit for 2 minutes, then blot away. — Wash linen in cool to lukewarm water (max 40°C) on a gentle cycle. Air drying is preferred to preserve fibres and prevent shrinkage.
