Step 1: Let It Dry Completely

Wait until the mud is completely dry and crusty. This is critical — treating wet mud will spread the stain significantly.

Step 2: Brush Off Dried Mud

Use a stiff brush or old toothbrush to break up and remove as much dried mud as possible. Vacuum up the debris.

Step 3: Apply Cold Water and Soap

Dampen the remaining stain with cold water, then apply a generous amount of liquid dish soap or laundry detergent. Let it soak for 15 minutes.

Step 4: Scrub and Rinse

Gently scrub the stain with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly with cold water. Repeat if needed before washing on a cold cycle.

Step 5: Special Care for Mattress

After treatment, sprinkle baking soda generously across the area to absorb residual moisture and odours. Leave for at least 4–6 hours (ideally overnight), then vacuum thoroughly. Air the mattress before re-dressing.

Mattresses cannot be saturated — excess liquid soaks into the foam or springs and causes mould, odours, and permanent damage. Use as little moisture as humanly possible. Never use a steam cleaner unless specifically rated for mattresses. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals — they damage foam and leave residues you'll sleep on.

For heavy mud stains, soak the item in a mix of cold water and laundry detergent for 30 minutes before washing. This loosens deeply embedded soil particles. — Use cold water only — heat can set proteins (sweat, urine, blood) and warm conditions encourage mould growth inside the mattress.
