Step 1: Identify the Paint Type

Check the paint tin — water-based/latex paint can be removed with water while wet. Oil-based paint requires mineral spirits or paint thinner.

Step 2: Remove Excess Paint

Use a spoon to lift off as much excess paint as possible. For dried paint, carefully scrape with a blunt knife.

Step 3: Water-Based Paint: Rinse with Warm Water

For water-based paint, flush immediately with warm water, then apply dish soap and scrub gently. Rinse and repeat until clear.

Step 4: Oil-Based Paint: Apply Mineral Spirits

For oil-based paint, apply a small amount of mineral spirits to a cloth and blot the stain. Follow with dish soap to remove the spirits.

Step 5: Special Care for Mattress

After treatment, sprinkle baking soda generously across the area to absorb residual moisture and odours. Leave for at least 4–6 hours (ideally overnight), then vacuum thoroughly. Air the mattress before re-dressing.

Critical Warning

Mattresses cannot be saturated — excess liquid soaks into the foam or springs and causes mould, odours, and permanent damage. Use as little moisture as humanly possible. Never use a steam cleaner unless specifically rated for mattresses. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals — they damage foam and leave residues you'll sleep on.

Pro Tip

Dried latex paint can sometimes be loosened by soaking in warm water for 30 minutes first. For dried oil-based paint, the stain is unfortunately often permanent once fully set. — Use cold water only — heat can set proteins (sweat, urine, blood) and warm conditions encourage mould growth inside the mattress.
