Step 1: Apply Lemon Juice and Salt

Sprinkle salt over the rust stain, then squeeze fresh lemon juice generously on top. The acid in the lemon dissolves the iron oxide while the salt provides gentle abrasion.

Step 2: Let It Sit in Sunlight

If possible, lay the item in direct sunlight for 1–2 hours. The combination of sun, acid, and salt lifts the rust naturally.

Step 3: Rinse and Check

Rinse with cool water. For stubborn stains, apply white vinegar directly and let it soak for 30 minutes before rinsing again.

Step 4: Wash Normally

Once the stain is gone, wash the item as normal. Do not put it in the dryer if any rust remains — heat will set the stain permanently.

Step 5: Special Care for Mattress

After treatment, sprinkle baking soda generously across the area to absorb residual moisture and odours. Leave for at least 4–6 hours (ideally overnight), then vacuum thoroughly. Air the mattress before re-dressing.
