Step 1: Scrape Off Excess

Use a spoon or blunt knife to gently scrape away any solid sauce. Avoid rubbing — this pushes the colour deeper into the fibres.

Step 2: Rinse from the Back

Turn the fabric inside out and run cold water through the back of the stain. This pushes the sauce out through the same path it entered, rather than further in.

Step 3: Apply Dish Soap

Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers. The soap cuts through the oils in the sauce. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Treat with White Vinegar

If colour remains, dab on a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. The acid helps break down the tomato pigments. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse.

Step 5: Special Care for Tile & Grout

For grout specifically, after cleaning, apply a clear grout sealer once dry. This prevents future staining and makes the next clean much easier. Re-seal grout every 12–18 months.

Grout is porous and absorbs stains, mould, and discolouration much faster than tile. Treat any spill on grout immediately — sealed tile is far more forgiving. Avoid acidic cleaners (like vinegar) on natural stone tile or marble — they etch the surface permanently. Stick to pH-neutral cleaners on stone.

Sunlight is a natural bleaching agent for tomato stains. Once treated, lay the damp fabric in direct sunlight for an hour — the UV often removes the last traces of orange-red colour. — Warm water works well on tile. For grout, an old toothbrush plus a baking soda paste (or oxygen bleach) reaches deep into the porous joints.
