Step 1: Scrape Off Excess

Use a spoon or blunt knife to gently scrape away any solid sauce. Avoid rubbing — this pushes the colour deeper into the fibres.

Step 2: Rinse from the Back

Turn the fabric inside out and run cold water through the back of the stain. This pushes the sauce out through the same path it entered, rather than further in.

Step 3: Apply Dish Soap

Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers. The soap cuts through the oils in the sauce. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Treat with White Vinegar

If colour remains, dab on a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. The acid helps break down the tomato pigments. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse.

Step 5: Special Care for Velvet

After cleaning, gently brush the velvet pile in one direction with a soft-bristled brush while still slightly damp. This restores the nap and prevents permanent crush marks as it dries.
