Step 1: Harden the Wax

Place a sealed bag of ice cubes on top of the wax to harden it completely. For small items, place the whole item in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Scrape Off the Wax

Once fully hardened, use a blunt knife or spoon to gently chip and scrape off as much wax as possible. Work from the edges inward.

Step 3: Iron with Paper

Place a clean paper bag or several paper towels over the remaining stain. Iron on a low warm setting — the wax melts and absorbs into the paper. Move to a clean section as wax transfers.

Step 4: Treat Any Colour Residue

If the candle was coloured, treat any remaining dye with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Blot gently from the outside in, then rinse and launder.

Step 5: Special Care for Silk

Before any treatment, test your cleaning solution on a hidden seam. Blot only — never scrub. After treatment, rinse with cold water and roll in a clean towel to absorb moisture. Lay flat to dry away from sunlight.

Silk is extremely delicate. Never rub, wring, or use alkaline cleaners. Even water can leave marks if not treated carefully — always blot and air dry flat. Avoid all alcohol-based cleaners, bleach, and enzyme detergents — they will permanently damage silk fibres.

Pro Tip

For candle wax on carpet or upholstery, follow the same freeze-and-scrape method, but use a hairdryer on low instead of an iron. Hold paper over the wax while warming gently — the wax wicks into the paper. — Use only cold water. Never put silk in a washing machine unless the label explicitly says machine washable.
