How to Care for Nylon

Nylon is one of the strongest synthetic fibers — used in everything from hosiery to backpacks to swimwear. It's extremely durable but very heat-sensitive. The number one rule: keep nylon away from heat.

How to Wash Nylon

Nylon handles cold-water washing well but degrades quickly with heat. Wash on cold or gentle cycles to extend its life.

  • check_circleUse cold water and a gentle cycle
  • check_circleA normal detergent is fine, but skip the bleach
  • check_circleWash nylon in mesh bags to prevent snagging
  • check_circleDon't mix with items that have zippers, Velcro, or hooks

How to Dry Nylon

Nylon dries very quickly — it almost never needs the dryer. Tumble drying can damage the elasticity and cause heat shrinkage.

  • check_circleHang or lay flat to dry
  • check_circleAvoid direct sunlight — UV degrades nylon over time
  • check_circleNever tumble dry — heat shrinks and weakens nylon
  • check_circleMost items air dry in 1–2 hours

Ironing Nylon

Honestly — don't. Nylon melts at low temperatures and almost never needs ironing. If you absolutely must, use the coolest setting with a pressing cloth.

  • check_circleAvoid ironing whenever possible
  • check_circleIf unavoidable, use the lowest heat setting (around 100°C)
  • check_circleAlways use a pressing cloth
  • check_circleNever iron directly on swimwear or stretch nylon

Caring for Hosiery & Activewear

Most nylon items are stockings, tights, or athletic wear — these have specific care needs.

  • check_circleHand wash hosiery in cold water with mild soap
  • check_circleUse a lingerie bag for machine washing
  • check_circleNever wring — squeeze gently
  • check_circleHang to dry — never use the dryer
  • check_circleWash activewear inside-out to preserve printed graphics

Storage Tips

Nylon stores well but is sensitive to UV light and chemicals.

  • check_circleStore in a dark place — UV light weakens nylon
  • check_circleDon't store near rubber items — they can react with nylon
  • check_circleKeep away from heat sources
  • check_circleFold rather than hang stretchy nylon to preserve shape

tips_and_updatesPro Tips

  • starSnags in nylon hosiery can be stopped with clear nail polish — dab a small amount on each end of the snag.
  • starNylon swimwear lasts longer if rinsed in cold tap water right after pool or ocean use — chlorine and salt degrade it.
  • starFor yellowed white nylon, soak in a mixture of cold water and oxygen-based bleach (never chlorine) for an hour.
